Kotoko Back On The Road Six After Weeks After Fatal Accident

Kotoko will this morning make their first road trip outside Kumasi – six weeks after the bus accident at Nkawkaw on July 12, 2017. Deputy Equipment Officer, Thomas Obeng Asare sadly lost his life in the unfortunate incident. Players and officials suffered various injuries.

The team was returning to Kumasi after a league match against Inter Allies at the El Wak Sports Stadium, Accra when the accident occurred. The healing of wounds lasted three weeks. Some of the victims like midfielder, Michael Akuffu; Team Manager, Godwin Ablordey and Coach Steven Polack are yet to fully recover.

The Porcupines returned to competitive action on August 6. On Wednesday at Sogakope, they will be up against WAFA in the last of their outstanding matches. Before then, however, the team takes another major step toward their recovery today with their maiden road trip since the accident. They will leave Kumasi for Accra enroute to Sogakope.

They’re psychologically ready for the trip. “What happened was unfortunate but that’s in the past. We’ve moved on” said defender, Augustine Sefah. “We harboured fears initially but travelling is part of us. We’ve to let go any fear and believe that, nothing of that sort will happen again. We’ve gotten over it. God willing, we will go and be back safely” he added.

Defender, Eric Donkor shared similar sentiments. “We are used to the practice of traveling up and down for matches. It will be normal for us. What’s important is that, we draw the needed lessons from the July 12 incident and take necessary precautions. There’s nothing to fear. I’m sure we are going to have a great game and a good result” said Donkor.
