The Ministry of Youth and Sports has extended their support to the Ghana Athletics Association for the upcoming world athletics championships in London.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has promised to do his best to provide all the sporting disciplines in the country with supports from the GNPC deal to ensure that all the disciplines are able to develop their sport and represent Ghana in tournaments and championships as well.
“We have held so many talks with the GAA and their president, Mr Francis Dodou with respect to the world athletics championships, they have given us their budget for the championships and and we will definitely support them, the GNPC sponsorship now includes all sporting disciplines and so we have agreed that we will give them an amount of 84,000 dollars for the championships,” he stated.
“They( GAA ) expressed joy at our commitments, we are of the believe that they will do the nation proud in UK and bring more medals, i’m not totally disappointed with the fact that we are going with few athletes since they had to make the qualification grade before booking their presence, am much convinced that taking there few with prospects is better than taking many who will bring you disgrace,” he added.
The championships begins on the 4th August to 13th August 2017 of which Ghana has 8 athletes to represent the country.
Ernest Obeng in 1983 first represented Ghana in the 100 meters race in the world Athletics championships.
